Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) are caused by prenatal alcohol exposure and can affect brain development, behavior, and learning throughout a person’s life. Most individuals with FASD do not have visible physical signs, which can make the condition difficult to recognize.

That’s why it’s important to focus on the brain—not the face.

People with FASD may experience challenges with memory, attention, decision-making, and daily living skills, even though their disability may not be immediately apparent.

We partner with the NC Proof Alliance to increase awareness and understanding of FASD. Our work focuses on educating caregivers, educators, and healthcare professionals so they can better recognize FASD and provide informed, compassionate support.

We are grateful to partner with Shamika Howard of Vaya Health. As a certified FASD Trainer through Proof Alliance NC, Shamika brings both expertise and deep passion to this important work. She offers free trainings across North Carolina that help professionals, educators, and community members better understand fetal alcohol spectrum disorders and learn practical ways to support those affected. Shamika is also a dedicated supporter of The Arc and often volunteers at our events—her commitment strengthens our community and advances our mission.
