Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness

It’s easy to take these words for granted, but for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, achieving these things isn’t always easy. Historically, people with disabilities have been denied fundamental human and civil rights, and while much progress has been made, there is still much work to do.

That’s why The Arc of Buncombe County is here – to help these individuals achieve their potential through education, family support, services and programs that enrich their lives. We are also here to give them a voice through advocacy efforts focused on ensuring that they receive equal treatment under the law.

What Makes the Arc of Buncombe County Special

The Arc of Buncombe County is dedicated to serving children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities living in Buncombe and surrounding counties. We fulfill our mission through advocacy and liaison, social enrichment programs, crisis intervention, FASD awareness, summer camp scholarships, Operation Santa and Wings for Autism.

Our Story, Our Mission

The local branch of The Arc began in 1957 with a group of volunteers concerned about the lack of programs for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities in their community. Today it is a professional organization that effectively works to help individuals and their families realize their highest potential through advocacy, education, programs and family support.

The Arc of Buncombe County exists to empower children & adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities to realize their highest potential through advocacy, education, programs and family support.
